The rain and wind came back today, its very blustery. Mondays around here are very quite, once the rich hour settles down. Another day of walking to new parts of the city. I didn't quite get in all that I wanted to see in the South Canals, so I'll venture out again, southeast of The Tulip.
Before I do I wanted to check out the church that is in the square where my apartment is located. I do know the bottom floor is a restaurant, but Im curious to its history. The first stone of the Waag Square "gate" was laid on April 28, 1488, since this was the original center of the city. Over the next few centuries, it had become a soldier academy, nunnery, school for the priesthood, and for almost a century (1850-1942) it was a Jewish Community Center and Art Museum . The Nazi's then ran into the city and made it a command post, taking most of the one of a kind art and artifacts. But after WWII, almost all the artifacts were recovered after being found in a mine in Germany.
I also came across the Design and Antique Center. Wow a lot of neat Dutch antiques, especially china. I almost bought a pair of old antique ice skates, Reminded me of the movie I saw as a kid on the Wonderful World of Disney, "Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates". If you are under 50, you'll need to google it.
Tonight I find a Vegetarian Restaurant next to a jazz club that I drifted into called..Beth's. Tonight's dish was a veggie casserole covered with melted gouda cheese, sesame seed french sourdough bread (major carbs on this one), finished off with hot apple crumble pie. The Jazz Club was pretty neat, it was "free mike" night. Thats where anyone can come in and play for up to 30 minutes. There was a lady, Ginger ?, that played a mean alto sax. I stayed for about 2 hours, drinking 2 for 1 Grolsch Beer. I make my way through the red light district, waving at a few of my pals in the Superman Booths.
